Why This Matters Now

Since April 2023, Sudan’s conflict has resulted in the partial or complete closure of a significant portion of the country’s health facilities. In many areas, electricity shortages, damaged infrastructure, and the absence of formal support systems have forced communities to rely on volunteer-led, grassroots solutions to survive.

In West Kordofan, access to functional healthcare is extremely limited. Displacement, insecurity, and lack of basic infrastructure have placed immense pressure on the few remaining facilities still operating. Immediate, targeted support is essential to keep these services running and accessible.

Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs)

Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) are community-led, volunteer-run initiatives created by ordinary Sudanese people to care for their neighbors when no other support is available. They provide life-saving medical assistance, food, and basic services with dignity and compassion. For many families, ERRs are the only place to turn in moments of crisis.

By working through ERRs, this project strengthens locally driven systems that are already responding to urgent needs, ensuring assistance reaches communities quickly and effectively.

Our First Program: Babanusa, West Kordofan

The Hunt Foundation’s initial support will focus on Babanusa locality in West Kordofan, where access to healthcare has almost entirely disappeared. Today, Al-Teboun Rural Hospital is the only remaining facility serving the area, despite operating with minimal resources.

Patients arrive to find wards without adequate lighting, beds without mattresses, and delivery rooms lacking essential supplies. Still, dedicated local volunteers and medical staff continue to care for patients with what little they have.

Through this first phase of support, The Hunt Foundation will help restore basic, dignified care at Al-Teboun Hospital by providing:

  • Solar power to ensure consistent electricity
  • Lighting and ventilation so patients are not treated in darkness
  • Mattresses and bedding so people can rest and heal with dignity
  • Rehabilitation of hospital wards to create safer, more functional spaces for care
  • Construction and rehabilitation of toilets and sanitation facilities, allowing patients and families access to clean, dignified hygiene

This program will support more than 200,000 displaced people and host community members who depend on this hospital for emergency, maternal, and critical care. For many, it is the difference between receiving help close to home or having no care at all.

A Commitment Beyond the Emergency

This initiative represents the beginning of a long journey. Recovery for Sudanese communities will take time, patience, and sustained compassion. The Hunt Foundation is committed to continuing its support for Sudanese Emergency Response Rooms as communities work to rebuild their lives—step by step, with dignity at the center.

This work is made possible through collaboration with Proximity to Humanity (P2H), whose close relationships with local communities ensure support reaches those who need it most. We extend our sincere gratitude to P2H for their partnership and shared belief in the power of community-led care.

We stand with the people of Sudan—today, and for the long road ahead.
