Founded in 1963 in Addis Ababa, Mekanissa School for the Deaf is a pioneering institution that empowers deaf children through inclusive education. Its unique model enrolls both deaf students and one hearing sibling, strengthening communication through Ethiopian Sign Language and building strong family and community ties. The school also plays a vital role in the development of Ethiopian Sign Language and contributes to the broader deaf community through cultural and artistic initiatives.
Program Goals:
- Academic Support: Provide students with inclusive education to strengthen their communication through Ethiopian Sign Language
- Empowering Women: Providing a year’s supply of sanitary pads to its female students to advocate for menstrual health and educational equity.
