Empowering Girls at Mekanissa School for the Deaf

Founded in 1963 in Addis Ababa, Mekanissa School for the Deaf is a pioneering institution that empowers deaf children through inclusive education. Its unique model enrolls both deaf students and one hearing sibling, strengthening communication through Ethiopian Sign Language and building strong family and community ties. The school also plays a vital role in the development of Ethiopian Sign Language and contributes to the broader deaf community through cultural and artistic initiatives.

The Hunt Foundation is proud to support Mekanissa’s mission by providing a yearly supply of sanitary pads and underwear to its female students. In Ethiopia, where 75% of women lack access to menstrual hygiene products, many girls are forced to miss school during their periods. This initiative ensures that students can attend class with dignity and confidence. Together, we’re advocating for menstrual health and educational equity.
